#74ArtsAndCultureNews — Petrit Halilaj is part of “Ways of Knowing” at Walker Art Center, a project by Rosario Guiraldes. This group show includes eleven artists challenging assumptions about how we come to know what we know.⁠ The exhibition is on view through 7 September 2025.

Halilaj presents “Very volcanic over this green feather”, an installation that enlarges the artist’s drawings created when he was 13 years old and living with his family in a refugee camp in Albania, displaced by the Kosovo War. ⁠

The images are magnified and rearranged as monumental hanging cut-outs in the gallery, combining poignant images of rural landscapes and animals with scenes of war and violence. “Very volcanic over this green feather” is Halilaj’s act of reshaping painful fragments of memory into a new understanding.

The Face Magazine: Culture Shift celebrates iconic fashion images and portraits from The Face, a trail-blazing youth culture and style magazine that has shaped the creative and cultural landscape in Britain and beyond.

From 1980 to 2004, The Face played a vital role in creating contemporary culture. Musicians featured on its covers achieved global success and the models it championed – including a young Kate Moss – became the most recognisable faces of their time. The magazine also launched the careers of many leading photographers and fashion stylists, who were given the creative freedom to radically reimagine the visual language of fashion photography and define the spirit of their times. Relaunched in 2019, the magazine continues to provide a disruptive and creative space for image-makers, championing fresh talent in photography, fashion, music and graphic design.

#74ArtsAndCultureNews — “Anselm Kiefer – Sag mir, wo die Blumen sind” is on view concurrently at @vangoghmuseum and @stedelijkmuseum through 9 June 2025

For the first time in their history, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam are joining forces to stage a major exhibition of one of the most important artists of our time: Anselm Kiefer. Anselm Kiefer - Sag mir wo die Blumen sind is one exhibition divided between two museums.

The exhibition places Kiefer centre stage. From his childhood, Kiefer has had a special connection to the work of Vincent van Gogh. To this day, Kiefer’s admiration for Van Gogh is visibly present in his work. He also has a long, personal history with the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. The museum bought and displayed his work from the beginning, giving Kiefer recognition for his art.

Especially for this exhibition, Kiefer has created new works that have never been seen before. Of course, popular favourites from the collections of both museums are also on display. At the Van Gogh Museum, famous paintings by Vincent van Gogh are shown along with works by Kiefer. At the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, you can see all the Kiefers from the collection together for the first time.

#74ArtsAndCultureNews — “We were building a fantastic palace at night” is on view at the Institut Giacometti in Paris through 8 June 2025

The exhibition “We were building a fantastic palace at night” presented at the Institut Giacometti engages in a dialogue between the works of contemporary artist Petrit Halilaj and those of Alberto Giacometti.

Marked by his childhood in war-torn Kosovo, Petrit Halilaj develops a practice where individual and collective stories intertwine to envisage spaces of freedom filled with playfulness and lightness. Like Giacometti at certain times, child-like drawing has nourished his work, opening up a dreamlike and even magical horizon to sculpture.

#74ArtsAndCultureNews — Noah Davis is on view at @barbicancentre through 11 May 2025.

Celebrating the late artist’s expansive creativity, this debut retrospective showcases Noah Davis as one of the most original and uncanny painters emerging in recent years.

Primarily based in Los Angeles, Noah Davis created a body of figurative paintings that explores a range of Black life. Motivated by the desire to ‘represent the people around me’, Davis painted figures diving into pools, sleeping, dancing, and looking at art in scenes that can be both realistic and dreamlike, joyful and melancholic. Davis drew from anonymous photography, personal archives, film, art history and his imagination to create a ravishing body of work. Often enigmatic, his paintings reveal a deep feeling for humanity and the emotional textures of the everyday.

In 2012, Davis co-founded The Underground Museum to give free access to world-class art for the people of Arlington Heights, LA. This exhibition presents over 50 of Davis’ works in painting, sculpture, curating and community-building from 2007 to his untimely death in 2015.
