PRESS RELEASE
For José Parlá’s solo show at UNTITLED, ART Miami Beach, Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery, in collaboration with ISTANBUL’74 presents a selection of “ISTHMUS” ceramics as well as new abstract paintings by artist José Parlá. Parlá’s new body of works reflects the themes in the artist’s practice including calligraphy, language, and the cityscape.
Parlá’s new body of sculptural work was created specifically for the artist’s recent solo exhibition at ISTANBUL’74 this past September. Paying homage to the masterful Turkish calligraphers, Parlá’s calligraphic gestures find their way into the new body of works as the mode of image production. This a reflection of the research-based approach to “urban environments” that the artist has been foregrounding in his work.
ABOUT ARTIST
José Parlá has emerged in the past decade as one of his generation’s most fervent champions of painting, working for more than twenty years to establish a style of painting that transforms the language of the street into a hybrid form of abstraction and urban realism. His work provides markers of time and is about the accumulation of information that settles like accretions upon the surfaces of walls and streets, and in the lines on the hands and faces of the people who inhabit them.
