PRESS RELEASE
CLUBHOUSE BEBEK in collaboration with ISTANBUL’74 presents From Material to Meaning exhibition.
The relationship between art and surface is a profound dialogue that stretches back to the dawn of humanity. From the earliest figures etched onto the cave walls of Altamira to the elegant canvases of the Renaissance and the modern experiments with surfaces such as fabric and ceramics, the surface has always been both the starting point and the companion of the artist’s creative process.
Each surface carries its own history and textural narrative. Paper, with its fragility, provides space for the most direct and intimate expressions of the artist; canvas allows for powerful narratives built layer by layer. Fabric, with its mobility and organic texture, brings the narrative to a flexible ground, while ceramics, with its permanence and tactile presence, bridges the past and the future. Aluminum, with its shiny and industrial surface reflecting modernity, invites the artist to experimental forms of expression, offering a bold foundation for contemporary narratives with its cold and durable structure.
Featured in this exhibition, artists Renin Bilginer, Ertuğrul Güngör & Faruk Ertekin, Tom Fellows, Özer Toraman, and Serkan Yüksel each engage with these diverse materials, exploring the boundaries of artistic expression in unique ways.
From Material to Meaning invites the viewer to explore this close relationship between the artist and the physical material, revealing not only how material and surface shape artistic expression but also how the artist strives to create a new world on each surface.
