JR & JOSE PARLA: “THE WRINKLES OF THE CITY – HAVANA, CUBA” FILM SCREENING

JR exhibits freely in the streets of the world, catching the attention of people who are not typical museum visitors. In 2006, he created Portrait of a Generation, portraits of suburban “thugs” that he posted, in huge formats, in the bourgeois districts of Paris. This illegal project became “official” when the Paris City Hall wrapped its building with JR’s photos. In 2007, with Marco, he made Face 2 Face, the biggest illegal exhibition ever. JR posted huge portraits of Israelis and Palestinians face to face in eight Palestinian and Israeli cities. In 2008, he embarked on a long international trip for Women Are Heroes, in which he underlines the dignity of women who are often the targets of conflicts, and created The Wrinkles of the City. In 2010, his film Women Are Heroes was presented at Cannes. In 2011 he received the TED Prize, after which he created the Inside Out project. His most recent project involves a collaboration with New York City Ballet.

A selection of 115 films from 42 countries will be shown at the 14th !f İstanbul International Independent Film Festival, that will run in Istanbul during February 12-22nd. Within the !f Events, “The Wrinkles of The City – Havana, Cuba” directed by JR and José Parlá will be on view from February 17 through 20 at ISTANBUL’74 Galatasaray.

The !f audiences are familiar with JR’s works such as; Women Are Heroes (!f 2011) and Inside Out (!f 2014) which marked some of the best overlaps between the art world and cinema. This year, you’re invited to see the Cuban part of his latest project “The Wrinkles of the City” in a soulful film at ISTANBUL’74 Galatasaray. In May 2012, JR collaborated with Cuban-American artist José Parlá on The Wrinkles of the City: a huge mural installation in Havana, undertaken for the Havana Biennale, for which JR and Parlá photographed and recorded 25 senior citizens who had lived through the Cuban revolution, creating portraits which Parlá, who is of Cuban descent, interlaced with palimpsestic calligraphic writings and paintings. The closing city of the project will be Istanbul, planned for spring 2015. We wish everyone to enjoy this film full of grace and wisdom before Istanbul meets with the project.
