EXHIBITION OF WOODEN SCULPTURES BY MINE AKIN

ISTANBUL’74 presents MİNE AKIN, an Exhibition of Wooden Sculptures from the Series “From the Whole,” hosted by Maçakızı.

“The Mediterranean, the homeland of the olive trees, is where I was born and Bodrum is where I call my home now. Wise olive trees emerge in the Mediterranean and disappear past the Aegean. I don’t know what to make of this, but it is as if the universe has destined my return to this Aegean town.”

The exhibition features a selection of wooden sculptures carved into displaced olive tree bodies, a material the artist has worked with for the first time, presented at one of the most iconic venues of Bodrum, Maçakızı Hotel, 19 February – 24 April 2022.

The olive tree keeps the memory of the land where it is located. In Mine Akın’s sculptures, this unique memory of the olive tree integrates with the everlasting aesthetics of the female body. The works of the artist, reflecting elements of herself, femininity, and the power of feminine energy, adopt the surprising and dynamic nature of the olive tree. 

The olive tree has a maverick and idiosyncratic structure that draws its path with the direction given by its veins. These olive tree bodies, which became the vehicle for the artist’s From the Whole exhibition, are 100-year-old roots that were cut to make room for a construction site in Gaziantep. These chopped trees return to life when their lives give a hand to an artist as if they are going back to the beginning, hence symbolizing eternity.

The production process, which Akın describes as a meditative action, proceeds by filtering through the raw structure of the olive tree and finds its place in almost effortless forms adorned with curves.

With the works that channel the memory of each tree in each sculpture, the artist makes a gentle reference to nature, and to nature’s balance and cycles. Like a forest full of trees that do not stand in each other’s ways but are always aware of each other’s existence, Akın’s sculptures are the main protagonists advancing in a single and mutual story.*

Mine Akın has participated in numerous exhibitions internationally following her BA at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul, in Sculpture. In her works, Akın uses bronze, wood and metal and she currently continues her artistic practice in her studio in Yalıkavak, Bodrum, Turkey.

ISTANBUL’74, Mine Akın’ın “Bütünün İçinden” serisine ait ahşap heykellerin yer aldığı, Maçakızı ev sahipliğinde gerçekleşen sergisini sunmaktan mutluluk duyar.

“Zeytin Akdeniz coğrafyasında başlar, Ege ile son bulur. Benim doğduğum topraklar Akdeniz zeytin memleketi ve hayatımı devam ettirmeye karar verdiğim nokta Bodrum. Buna ne denir bilmiyorum ama sanki evren önceden bunu belirlemiş.”

Akın, ilk kez çalıştığı bir materyal olarak yerinden edilmiş zeytin ağacı gövdelerinden yonttuğu heykellerini, ISTANBUL’74 ve Maçakızı iş birliğiyle, Bodrum’un en ikonik mekanlarından Maçakızı Otel’de, 19 Şubat – 24 Nisan 2022 tarihleri arasında sergiliyor.

Zeytin ağacı bulunduğu toprakların hafızasını tutar. Mine Akın’ın heykellerinde zeytin ağacının bu eşsiz hafızası kadın vücudunun sonsuz estetiği ile bütünleşiyor. Sanatçının kendinden, kadınlıktan, dişil enerjinin gücünden öğeler yansıtan eserleri zeytin ağacının sürprizli ve devinimli yapısını benimsiyor. Diğer ağaçlardan farklı olarak zeytin ağacı yolunu kendi damarlarının verdiği yön ile çizen, adeta başına buyruk ve nev-i şahsına münhasır bir yapıya sahip.

Sanatçının Bütünün İçinden sergisine araç olmuş bu zeytin ağacı bedenleri, Gaziantep’te bir inşaat alanına yer açmak için kesilen 100 yıllık köklerden oluşuyor. Hayatları bir sanatçıya el vermeye evrildiğinde ve böylelikle köklerinden koparılan bu ağaçlarla yeniden karşılaşıldığında adeta başa döner gibi yaşama dönen bu ağaçlar, sonsuzluğu sembolize ederler. 

Sanatçının eserlerinde izdüşümlerini ve kırıntılarını sürekli olarak gördüğümüz dişil semboller, zeytinle birleşen kesişimlerinde artık daha soyut bir hal alır. Akın’ın meditatif bir aksiyon olarak tanımladığı üretim süreci zeytin ağacının ham ve sert yapısından süzülerek ilerler ve kıvrımlarla bezenmiş adeta çabasız formlarla kendine yer bulur.

Her bir heykelde başka bir ağacın hafızasına kanal açan eserlerle sanatçı; doğaya, doğanın kendi dengesine ve döngüsüne nazik bir atıfta bulunur. Birbirlerinin önüne geçmeden ama hep birbirlerinin varlıklarından haberdar olan bir orman dolusu ağaç gibi, Akın’ın heykelleri de tek ve ortak bir hikayenin içinde ilerleyen ana kahramanlar.*

Mine Akın, Mimar Sinan Üniversitesi Heykel Bölümü’nde lisansını tamamladıktan sonra yurt dışında farklı sergilerde yer aldı. Sanatçı, bronz, ahşap ve metal malzemelerden ürettiği işlerini yaşadığı ve çalıştığı Yalıkavak’taki atölyesinde sürdürmektedir.
