A
DAY withNazy Nazhand is a New York City-based art advisor and creative consultant known for discovering and supporting artists who examine the complex political and technological developments of our time. Nazy’s independent practice explores the confluence of visual arts with other disciplines such as architecture, music, film and civic engagement. She is a prolific writer having contributed to publications such as Artnet, New York Times T Magazine, Vogue Arabia and Harper’s Bazaar Art, has participated in curatorial research trips throughout the Middle East and Central America, and has spoken extensively about the vital role of emerging global art markets and the socio-political impact of arts patronage in developing regions. Nazy currently serves on the New Museum’s Artemis Council.
I start my day with jazz playing throughout the apartment, scrolling through instagram and reading various news sources. I love to consume culture and politics and I follow the art market closely.

My go to reading sources throughout the day:
Artnet, Art Newspaper, New York Times,
Financial Times, The New Yorker, Paris
Review, Spiegel International, Air Mail.
And you can’t be a New Yorker and not read
the New York Post, even though the headlines
horrify me sometimes!
I miss the daily grind of gallery viewings,
studio visits, client meetings, museum exhibits
and art fairs, but the change in routine has
allowed me to spend more time working from
home than my office, and as a result the focal
point of my inspiration has shifted to my
personal environment.
My library of art tomes, coffee table books
and novels, and art collection by artists I have
had the pleasure of working with throughout
the years, offer endless sources of visual and
creative references.

Some works from my collection:
Abigail Reyes, “Secretarias”, 2016 (Video)
Gigi Stoll & Stephanie Tamez, “Mila Byzantine 1997”, 2014
Nabil Nahas, “Untitled”, 2013
Andrea Tese, “Five Bottles (Forgotten Stash)”, 2010-2012
Ahmed Mater, “Evolution Of Man”, 2010
My practice is devoted to transdisciplinary ideas and collaborations, and working closely with artists
to push the boundaries and definition of visual arts. In practical terms, I bring together various creative
disciplines to realize ambitious projects and monumental installations.
Currently I’m working with acclaimed Detroit-based techno DJ and producer Carl Craig on his
remarkable commission by Dia Art Foundation to create a sound installation at Dia Beacon in New York.
Party/After-Party, curated by Kelly Kivland, reimagines the vast industrial space in the museum’s
lower level as a sonic environment with techno and light intensifying and receding in semidarkness –
creating a euphoric and disorienting audio experience that is reflective of our ambiguous and isolated
contemporary existence. The exhibit opened in March of this year right before the global pandemic
shutdown, and is now reopened and will be on view until July 2021 which is very exciting!

Like the writer I often think to myself….
’I may never feel the joy of dancing again’,
but I consider this exhibit a gift that will
inspire us to move forward, grow and feel
inspired. And I count the days until I can
“taste a stranger’s sweat on the dance floor
again”.

In the evenings with longer daylight I love to go running or take long walks with my girlfriend along Hudson River Park. I start near my home in Chelsea and head down to World Trade Center and Battery City Park. The water and the boats and the glow of sunset against the urban backdrop of the city perfectly captures the incredible energy of New York City even during these times.
Once back I head to our rooftop for a drink with my husband, or with friends who sometimes drop by for a visit, or on my own to meditate. This is one of my favorite spaces in the world with nearly 360 degree views of Manhattan skyline and Hudson River.

Even though I wake up early, I’m a true night owl and love the duality of the sexy energy and stillness of the night. My nighttime ritual involves listening to music which is a constant in my life and reading a few chapters from the various books on current rotation.
