A Day With: Sinem Çelik

A

DAY with

Sinem is the founder of BluProjects, a sustainability-focused consultancy and community platform based in Istanbul. She is a multi-tasking freelance creative, passionate about discovering new fields, and collaborates with like-minded organizations to create a positive impact. Her primary experience is in the fashion industry; however, she is also involved in various multi-disciplinary projects, wherever guidance and expertise around sustainability are needed. She is also a ceramicist, creator of BluCeramics, playing with clay in her studio and enjoying the beauty of the hand-building process.

… and last but not least, she loves sunflowers

I usually wake up around 6.30 am, to enjoy the quiet hours of early mornings… I start the day with a walk in the woods where I live by, or yoga practice.

Before the rush of the day starts, I love to spend some time in my ceramic studio, which I’ve set up within my house. The hand-building process is my meditation; it inspires a mindful living and it teaches me to enjoy the very moment.

The most important moment of my mornings is kissing my daughter to wake her up, and the second one is my coffee ritual, which is a bit ceremonial experience for me. While enjoying my coffee, I always listen to music and write to-do lists ( which I love ) or ideas and dreams in my notebook.

I miss my fave coffee spots in Europe, this one was last summer in Milan…

Music is one of the essentials of my life…

I have an extensive taste of different music genres, from classical to jazz, indie pop/rock to oldies.

Then I run to meetings. The new “business as usual” means lots of digital meetings.

I enjoy my home-office more than ever.

Having a slash career, I perform different roles on various projects. I currently work with some global fashion brands as a consultant on their sustainability strategies collections and communications. I also give lectures and seminars to global companies and educational platforms.

My platform supports projects aiming to spread awareness of climate and environmental issues. And I am very excited to be the collaborative partner of ‘74, on their new sustainable art project, Flags For Future which will be launched soon.

This reminds me of my mind-blowing experience back in 2018 when I was in London. I was so impressed by Olafur Eliasson’s Ice Watch installation.

While driving, I always listen to podcasts; and my recent discoveries are ‘74PODCAST series Out of Focus hosted by Merve Çağlar, The Wardrobe Crisis Podcast, and The Future We Want by BBMG

My favorite neighborhood is the Galata area in the old town; it always feeds my soul. I love to walk in the streets, visit galleries, get lost in the library at Salt Galata, have a drink at the Soho House, or on a rooftop with Galata tower view…

I read a lot, and lately, I’m more interested in readings about the “consumption vs. happiness” relationship. Also, I love to research and learn about ceramics. The books I’m currently reading are Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown and The Age of Absurdity by Michael Foley.

here is a reading list for you

‘’Essentialism is not about how to get more things done, it’s about how to get the right things done. It doesn’t mean just doing less for the sake of less either. It is about making the wisest possible investment of your time and energy to operate at our highest point of contribution by doing only what is essential.”

I am very curious and have a constant-learner personality. I love to watch documentaries; I’ve recently re-watched A Plastic Ocean (2016) and discovered new things for our upcoming Flags for Future project, which is dedicated to the conservation of our waters.

A list for you ;

• Nowness Nature Series
• I Am (2011)
• One Strange Rock (2018)
• Broken (2019)
• David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet (2020)

My favorite winding-down activities include a sunset dinner with a beautiful view of the Bosphorus or a picnic at a secret beach. Also, I love to invite friends to my house. And if I’m too burned out, I find myself in Princes’ Islands, an hour ferry ride away from Istanbul, it always feels like a proper getaway.

And my before bedtime ritual is lighting a candle and listening to jazz music while writing to my gratefulness diary that reminds me of so many things I need to be grateful for.
